7 Reasons Why self storage owners are so happy?

by Marc Goodin, CEO of Storage Authority. The only self storage franchise in the US

  1. Just $11 million puts you in the top 1% of the wealthiest people in the US. It is hard to imagine that every self storage owner is not in the top 1-2%. In fact, I would think the majority of people who built and still own their self storage storage 10 years or more are in the top 1%. The first 12 million will make most people happy. More than 12 million means their work is a passion and having a passion also makes people happy.

We like the beach/water/ocean so much we got married on the beach!

2) I read one study that stated that people who live on the water are happier. Thanks to self storage I have a winter home on the ocean, I camp in my RV for 90 days/year on the ocean in the north and I have a cottage on the river. Would living on the water make you happy?

Most of our campfires are in the summer but If I am caught in the snow I like a good inpromto fire.

3) I have not read any studies on campfires or other fun stuff. But I know having a campfire over 100 nights a year makes me happy. What would you do to enjoy life if you had time & money?

4) Speaking of RVs and being happy. I updated my RV from thirty-something feet to forty-something feet. Upgrading to a full-size fridge put a huge smile on my face. It was a pain to go to the grocery store every day. I also enjoy the large ice machine too. RV's (and boats) are a blast but they are also a money-eating machines so you need a good stream of monthly income - like self storage provides.

5) Many people love to have big goals, do the work, and enjoy huge rewards. For many, self storage is the perfect goal that provides huge rewards. For others, the pain of going the extra mile for 5 years is too much compared to the slow pain of 50 years of 9 - 5

6)No more financial arguments/discussions. My wife GP & I are redoing kitchens in 2 of our houses now. I am sure our kitchen facets cost $1,000. We could have had a "discussion" and I could have gone to the plumbing supply and found a great faucet for $400. But who cares? If we don't spend it our kids will.

7)The value of being financially stress-free is hard to explain. You eat better. You have time to walk every day or go to the gym. Friday and Saturday nights out with friends can be any day or night of the week. To a point, money does buy happiness. I get it being Steve Jobs or Elon Musk rich and working 24/7 seven days a week would not buy most of us happiness. But enough wealth that provides on going double or triple+ of your paycheck so you can retire sounds like happiness to me.

What makes you happy?
